In honor of Earth Month, once again, we—in partnership with the Athens Village Board and DPW—are calling on our residents, neighbors and friends once again to collect trash from our local landscape.

As a non-profit community organization, Friends of Athens takes great pride in the health and beauty of our beloved village and aims to support a clean and safe environment for all to enjoy now and in the future to come.

Last year we collected 36 bags of trash and volunteers both young and old were energized by our success.

Participants will first meet in the DPW parking lot at 9:00 AM on Saturday, April 29, 2023.

The parking lot is located behind the Athens Volunteer Fire Department, 39 3rd Street, Athens, NY 12015.

Trash bags and disposable gloves will be provided. We’ll also have some trash pickers on a first come first served basis.

Please sign up below to commit to a 2-hour window.

This year we’ll be focusing on:

  • Leeds-Athens Road – west of Howard Hall Rd.

  • Union Street - 385 to Farm to Market Road

  • Route 385 - River Road to Union St, including the boat launch

  • Schoharie Tpke – east of Howard Hall Rd.

  • Village Interior - Warren Street to Water Street, including Kayak Launch

Don’t forget to wear sunscreen! Hats, bottled water, tick spray, and reflective vests are encouraged.

Participants will be required to sign a waiver, which we’ll have available on-site.

Children between the ages 12-17 are invited, with parental guidance.
